Nomad 183-Day Rule
Most countries establish tax residency if you spend 183 days or more in a 12-month period within their borders.
Clear under 183 rule
Your longest continuous trip is 0 days. Ensure your total combined days per country also stay under 183.
What Is the N-400 Physical Presence Calculator?
This calculator tracks your international travel history to determine whether you meet the physical presence and continuous residence requirements for Form N-400 — the USCIS Application for Naturalization. By logging your trips, it tells you how many days you have been outside the US, whether any single trip disrupts your continuous residence clock, and when your earliest eligibility date is.
It also tracks the 183-day tax residency threshold, useful for digital nomads and expats who need to avoid unintentionally establishing tax residency in a foreign country. All calculations run locally in your browser — no data is transmitted or stored.

Common Use Cases
Pre-filing eligibility check. Before submitting Form N-400, verify that your logged trips leave you within the 913-day physical presence limit and that no single trip exceeds 180 days.
Checking past trips for continuous residence issues. If you took a long trip years ago, enter it here to see whether it disrupts your clock and how that affects your earliest filing date.
Travel planning. Planning a long trip abroad? Enter the hypothetical dates to see whether it would push your naturalization eligibility date forward before committing.
The USCIS N-400 Requirements
If you are applying for US citizenship through naturalization using the standard 5-year route, you must satisfy two primary physical presence constraints:
- Physical Presence Limit: You must have been physically present in the United States for at least 30 months out of the 5 years (which translates to strictly no more than 913 days outside the US).
- Continuous Residence (6-Month Rule): If you take a single trip outside the United States that lasts more than 180 days (6 months), it automatically disrupts your continuous residence, potentially resetting your 5-year clock.
The Digital Nomad 183-Day Tax Rule
Most countries worldwide use the "183-day rule" to determine your tax residency. If you stay within a country's borders for 183 days or more in a given calendar year (or rolling 12-month period), you are legally recognized as a tax resident of that country and are subject to local income taxes on your global income.
Using this calculator, you can log all your trips and ensure your maximum trip length never breaches this critical threshold, protecting you from double taxation. All dates entered are calculated locally in your browser.
